Agisoft Metashape (formerly PhotoScan) allows you to automatically create high-quality 3D models of objects based on digital photographs. To reconstruct an object in Metashape, it is enough to upload photographs; no additional information is required. The reconstructed textured 3D model can be saved in various formats – OBJ, 3DS, PLY, FBX, VRML, COLLADA, U3D, PDF.

Metashape can process any photos taken with any digital camera from any angle. The main thing is that each element of the reconstructed object is visible from at least two shooting positions. If you enter at least one distance between object points or shooting positions into the program, Metashape restores the scale of the entire model and allows you to determine the distances between any points of the object and calculate the area and volume of the object or its parts. If you enter the coordinates of at least 3 object points or 3 shooting positions into the program, Metashape automatically ties the model to this coordinate system, allows you to calculate the projection of the model on a given surface (orthophotomap), the height matrix relative to a given surface (DEM), save the orthophotomap and DEM in various formats and coordinate systems. The photo processing process is fully automated and does not require preliminary calibration of cameras or manual marking of photos.

How Metashape Works
As a rule, the goal of Metashape users is to restore a textured 3D model of an object. This goal is achieved through four processing stages:
1) Determining the positions and parameters of the external and internal orientation of the cameras. At this stage, Metashape finds common points of the photographs and determines all camera parameters based on them: position (accurate to scale), orientation, internal geometry (focal length, distortion parameters, etc.). The results of this stage are a sparse cloud of common points in the 3D model space and data on the position and orientation of the cameras. In Metashape, the sparse point cloud is not used at further processing stages (except for the mode of constructing a model based on a sparse point cloud) and is used only for visual assessment of the quality of photo alignment. However, the sparse point cloud can be exported for further use in external programs. The set of data on the position and orientation of the cameras is used at further processing stages.
2) Construction of a dense point cloud. Construction of a dense point cloud is performed by Metashape based on the calculated positions of the cameras and the photographs used. The dense point cloud can be edited and classified before exporting or moving on to the next stage of creating a 3D model.
