Pillars of Eternity director wants the next installment to be fully 3D

In a recent interview, Pillars of Eternity series director Josh Sawyer expressed his desire for the next main entry in the series to be fully 3D, noting that this would enhance interaction with the environment and add dynamic height levels, creating a more immersive experience compared to previous installments.

Sawyer noted that Baldur’s Gate 3 was a successful example of how RPGs can leverage 3D environments, explaining that Pillars of Eternity 3 could combine Deadfire mechanics with more interactive environmental elements, such as geographic obstacles and changing terrain.

So far, there has been no official announcement that Pillars of Eternity 3 is in development, and it doesn’t appear to be in the works, at least not for now. However, Sawyer’s statements reflect a clear move toward updating the gameplay should Obsidian decide to work on a new installment. It’s worth noting that Avowed, released last February, was set in this universe, but it was by no means a third installment in the series.
