EA recently announced the layoff of approximately 400 players, along with several Codemasters employees. Media reports indicate that EA will redeploy its staff to other projects, with the company intending to halt development of racing games until further notice.
One of the titles for which EA owned the rights was the WRC series, which the company officially announced would cease development and a new development company would be announced. However, the same does not apply to the Formula 1 series. An official EA spokesperson confirmed to the media that the title’s license had been renewed for two additional years and that EA would own the rights until 2027.
This could mean that the Formula 1 series is exempt from the company’s desire to halt racing game development, or that contractual details led to this extension. It does not necessarily mean that the series will receive new releases during this time period.
